WHERE TO READ.
Words are hard to draw out, as I keep struggling with my flow.Trying to write right, to impress, draw attention and at the same time drive my message home.
There is an issue at hand that I believe if not looked at might cause the retrogression of this country rather than its progress.
THE PROBLEM I SEE.
My days in school were full of unfulfilled fantasies.
I had always wondered when we were going to study one of my favorite subjects; electricity in Integrated science..
When it was time to learn all about it, I was disappointed , frankly speaking because I had no idea what the teacher had just taught.
My idea of leaning was to lead me on a path of exploration to help me to find out the wonders and tales of the discovery of a subject.
I didn't have lessons from one teacher , soon my Maths teacher came around, I liked Maths, the fact that I had the opportunity to find answers by manipulating numbers and operations..hmmm...but numbers didn't seem fun in the end...cos I just didn't know how to apply a topic like functions to my everyday life.
Social studies wasn't bad at least, it had strings of tales and stories connected to it and I loved listening to how Dr.Kwame Nkrumah and his fellas achieved their dream.
I have always wondered if Dr.Nkrumah hadn't written any books that would be worth discussing in class.
Because for all I know, he had a great dream , and most at times great dreamers like to write out their minds.
I don't believe my social studies teacher had ever read any of his books, don't believe he is curious enough to do so, most of us aren't - I realized.
My idea of learning was realized when I met our English teacher. He opened my mind to the world of writing and all that there is to do with it.
My flow is better than before and will continue to be, because he appreciated my style of writing , the first time I did it.
He caused my imagination to come alive with his intuitive witty essay topics. The feedback he brought to class after every exercise was what made it all the better.
Today I have many friends who were in his class who are good writers.
The idea of learning has to do with my teacher instigating a will; a drive to learn. One that will set me on course for the rest of my life to pursue every feeling of : "could this be" or "is it possible" - let me find out-
My idea of learning is leading the student on a path of self-discovery.
Most students today are so engulfed in their studies and life, they barely have time to read about their passions. This is the point where self-discovery starts from - reading about what we feel we find joy in pursuing.
School systems have been structured so badly students can hardly study out of their courses, which only teaches them principles they can hardly experiment with it.
The problem I see is a wrong idea of learning that makes students historians, because all we do is learn the theories , hypothesis of others findings. Theories we don't even have the opportunity to experience with in order to understand its use and cause.
I am not saying I know how to perfectly how to fix the problems in our education system, what seems to me as broken.
I am only here to suggest a plus alternative.
THE PLUS ALTERNATIVE.
I have had a number of very interesting encounters these past years trying to find answers.
I have come to a point in my life that has made me certain that the picture of better years to come lies in the hands of the many youths in this country; in school and out of school.
The only way the youth can make do, bring this nation to the point worth appreciating , is if they know how first how to ask enough questions and then how to find the right answers.
"Listen here....its really simple, when we read our minds are opened to many other perspectives...so we ask more questions since we seeing from other angles.
I remember something else I learned not long ago, that thinking gives questions and reading gives answers.
Looking at this until we learn to pursue knowledge, we wont be able to discover ourselves and our world. This also means if we learn to pursue knowledge we will able to discover ourselves and our world".
I believe we have come to a point where we need to promote self-education and put it above all priorities.
Its time we made it clear to the youth and every member of this nation, the importance of reading and why we needn't make no mistakes about it.
I believe this is one sure way of teaching our youths to finding answers by showing them the path to self-discovery.
IMPLEMENTING THE PLUS ALTERNATIVE.
If we come to understand the importance of preaching self-education to every individual in this country .
If we come to understand the extent and worth of knowledge we could obtain and pass on to generations to come, I believe we will appreciate this move.
Building libraries is the act of implementing the plus alternative.
Community libraries , centers where people of all sorts of life can come and pick up a book and read.
A place where one can also learn to read and write, and also have the opportunity to talk to learned ears about their problems will be the real deal in helping the youth especially uncover their talents.
